With Active Textbook, quizzes can be made available right inside the book for students to interact with and test their understanding of the concepts as they are reading.
The quiz feature is an interactive overlay (an overlay is an object added to books in ActiveTextbook) that is created in a book. Interactive questions can be created that will be shown after a Reader clicks on the overlay zone. Quizzes can be placed anywhere in the book. It is a great resource for engaging students and making sure they are following along.
Quizzes can be made in two ways:
– Highlighting a word, sentence, or a paragraph, and selecting “Create overlay” from the newly opened drop down menu
– Clicking on the “Create overlay” button located on the left sidebar and drawing a box anywhere on the page
In both cases, clicking on “Create overlay” will open a new window, which will allow you to create different types of interactive elements to the book. In order to create a quiz, scroll down to select the “Quiz” icon, and click on the “create” button on the bottom right corner.
A new window will then pop up where you can customize the quiz. In this window, you can create a title for the quiz, set a time frame for quiz availability, fix the maximum number of attempts, set a time limit, and choose whether you want the answers to be revealed after the submission or not. In addition, you also have the option of importing quizzes; this option is useful if you have previously created a quiz in another book, and you want to use the same one again.
Furthermore, you have the option of editing the overlay appearance. To do this, click on the “Overlay appearance” button on the top right corner. In this tab you can change the Fill colour, Opacity, Background colour, thickness, and Style of the overlays. You can also choose to add a background image to your overlay.
After editing the “Overlay appearance”, you can go back to the “Overlay action” tab and start creating the questions. The text can be easily customized by changing its font, size, colour, etc.
In addition, you have the option of attaching media to the quiz questions. You can attach videos, images, audio, and other types of interactive elements to each question. After creating your first question, you can set the “Question type” to be multiple choice (single answer), multiple choice (multiple answer), True/False, or short answer.
In this tutorial I set my question type to be short answer.
You can then enter the response to the short answer question and enter as many variations as you wish.
You have now successfully created the first question. You can create as many questions as you like by clicking on the “Add Question” button on the bottom right corner. When you are finished with the quiz, click on “Create”.
You can now see your quiz by going to the page where you added the overlay. Holding your cursor on the overlay zone will allow you to see the type and name of the overlay that has been added to the book.
As soon as the quiz overlay is created, students can click on it and start answering the questions. They would be able to see the number of questions and the number of allowed attempts for the quiz on top of the window.
If the instructor chooses the option to reveal quiz results after submission, the students will be able to know immediately what his/her score is. If the answer is correct, the dialog will change to confirm that it was the correct answer.
On the other hand, if the answer is wrong, the window changes to reflect that scenario.
Instructors have the ability to edit the quiz at any time. To do this, you can either right-click on the quiz overlay and select “Edit Overlay”, or select the overlay menu on the left hand menu column. This icon has a music note, letter and an art image in it. After clicking on it, you can see the first item that you have created, which is the quiz. You can click on the pencil icon to modify the quiz or even delete it.
Creating a quiz is only one of the many interactive elements that can be added in ActiveTextbook. Visit our blog to see how you can add other types of multimedia to your books!
